What Happens If You Don't Pay

Your Credit Card Bills?

At once I say that you will not have to go to jail. But you'll be faced with the following unpleasant things:

  1. You will be charged late fees. They are usually between $30-50.
  2. Interest rates may be increased.
  3. Your telephone will be ringing several times a day, seemingly non-stop. Collectors will press you psychologically.
  4. Collection agents will often knock on your door. But know that you have certain rights. Read the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
  5. Credit card company will try to work with you in order to renegotiate the terms of payment. They'd rather get smaller than nothing.
  6. They can garnish wages, or put a lien on your property.
  7. Creditors can damage your credit score.
  8. Credit card cancellation.

Something depends on how much debt you're in. It's usually not worth their time and expense to do some actions from the list above, legal action, for example.

Creditors can simply write your debt off. But it ruins your credit score. This will make it more difficult to get a loan.
